CALL FOR VOLOUNTEERS

Project: Biodiversity assessment in the Upper Ganga Catchment in the Garhwal Himalaya, as part of a Cumulative Environmental Impact Assessment (CEIA) study of Hydropower Projects in the Bhagirathi-Alaknanda basin

Description of the project:

There is a major developmental initiative on foot in the Himalayan state of Uttarakhand, India. Supported by the Government of India and executed by the Government of Uttarakhand with partners from various Indian and foreign agencies, one of such initiative aims at utilising the hydropower potential of mountain-rivers of Uttarakhand and transforming it to an energy-independent state. However, being a region of high ecological uniqueness and fragility, the state faces the dilemma of sustainable development which will not destroy the Himalayan ecology or kill the rivers.

This project aims to study the cumulative environmental effects of about 130 hydro-power plants in the Bhagirathi-AlaknandaBasin. As part of our study, we plan to assess whether these projects, if constructed, will significantly affect the regional ecosystems or in a broader perspective, the Himalayan ecology, and if yes, what can be the extent of the effects in a quantitative sense.

OPPORTUNITY FOR YOU

We require enthusiastic and motivated volunteers to assist our research team in executing the study. There is an excellent opportunity to explore the Garhwal Himalayas in the snow-clad mountains and glaciers and along the most beautiful mountain river-system of India. Volunteers will be expected to assist in one of the following functional areas of the study,

1.      Wildlife

2.      Plant ecology

3.      Plant taxonomy

4.      GIS and remote sensing.

They will be provided with basic logistical support including tent accommodation in the field and transport during field visits and will be given opportunity to learn field techniques and methods used for the study in their chosen functional area. Minimum duration of volunteering is one month. A certificate will be issued to the candidate after successfully completion of their tenure.

If you think this is a great opportunity for you to explore the most majestic mountains of the world, send your CV and write why you are interested in this project. You will be contacted soon by one of us.
